Rachel Nixon is an award-winning journalist and an early convert to the power and potential of digital news media. She has a unique blend of skills having worked for world-renowned news organizations as well as a dynamic new media start-up.
Rachel is the Director of Digital Media for CBC News, based in Toronto. In this role she is spearheading the strategic direction and development of CBC News across digital platforms, including the leading Canadian news website, CBCNews.ca.
Until May 2009, Rachel was Global News Director for Vancouver-based NowPublic.com, running the editorial operations of the world’s largest participatory news network.
Before moving to Canada in 2007, Rachel spent nine years with the internationally acclaimed BBCNews.com, where, most recently, she served as Deputy World Editor. In her time with BBCNews.com, she led coverage of key global stories such as 9/11, the war in Iraq, the US presidential elections of 2004 and the mid-term elections of 2006. She also spent two years as the site’s daily news editor.
While at the BBC, Rachel specialized in telling stories across multiple platforms and developed an expertise in emerging journalism practices.
Rachel was named BBC World Service Editor of the Year in 2007 for her work across multiple and emerging media platforms. She has also served as an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of British Columbia.
